To understand your own ultradian rhythm, record your levels of focus, enthusiasm, and energy at the same times each day at hourly intervals. Within that 24-hour day, we cycle through 90-minute blocks of productivity and heightened focus, known as our ultradian rhythm. This dictates when we go to sleep, wake up, and experience peak levels of energy. We all run on a 24-hour internal вЂњclock,вЂќ referred to as our circadian rhythm.

While you canвЂ™t (and shouldnвЂ™t) eliminate the less productive times in your day, there is a way to recognize when youвЂ™re most likely to be at your best, and optimize it. There will be times when you can quickly write that email or finish that project, and others when it feels so unnatural and challenging to sit down and get work done. Over time, youвЂ™ll be able to train your brain to complete the full 25 minutes of continuous work without any internal or external interruptions. Stacey recommends saying something like, вЂњIвЂ™m in the middle of a pomodoro, IвЂ™ll get back to you in 25 minutesвЂќ or вЂњIвЂ™m not in a spot where I can respond right now.вЂќ Because your goal is to reach the end of the pomodoro, you should take a few seconds to deal with the interruption and go back to focusing. By capturing your distractions, youвЂ™ll be able to clear your mind to focus on the task at hand.Д®xternal distractions are when you are interrupted by others, like a coworker needing help on a project or a friend sending you a text. You can avoid wasting your pomodoro by making this distraction visible and writing it down. Internal distractions are made up of your own ideas and thoughts, like when you sit down to do work but suddenly feel the urge to check your email or look up something on the internet. Stacey says the best way to combat distractions is to first understand if they are internal or external.

While this sounds easy in practice, distractions can still find a way to creep into your work, even within a 25-minute time block. Each work interval is referred to as a pomodoro, and once youвЂ™ve finished four pomodoros, you take a longer break of 20 or 30 minutes. This is the science behind The Pomodoro Technique, a time-management method where you break your workday into 25-minute chunks separated by five-minute breaks. ThatвЂ™s according to studies by Joe DeGutis and Mike Esterman from the Boston Attention and Learning Lab who found that the most effective way to get things done was to focus for a bit, then take a short break before going back to concentrating. When you need to focus for long periods of time, less is more. Here are four ways to stay on task and get your work done. Instead, itвЂ™s about finding pockets throughout the day that are more conducive to focusing, and gradually reducing distractions. But the goal in times of uncertainty isnвЂ™t to match your peak productivity levels. If youвЂ™re distracted by the current newscycle, adapting to working in a new place (or working from home for the first time!), or trying to calm your worries, it can feel impossible to concentrate on work.
